JOSHUA WATCHED AS THE crowd left, and the lights went out. The carnies gathered around him. He called out to his shape shifters, “It is time to leave. We had a man here looking for his sister. I want to dismantle and leave before he goes to the local police. We did good while we were here, but it is time to move on.”

The wolves took the shape of humans and quickly picked up the area. They knew that the carnies would go to bed without bothering to assist.

Joshua walked over to the carousel as a menacing grin formed on his face. He watched in glee as the souls pounded on the mirror, trying to free themselves from their prison. They’d gathered a few more tonight. With each soul they trapped, they increased the power of the carnival, and he’d collected a few for his personal use.

He remembered being first turned and how hard it had been eating. He never thought of stealing a soul back then. Even now, most vampires didn’t realize they could steal souls to become stronger. The carnival had been his best idea since it made collecting souls so much easier. It was a great way to lure food to them without having to go out into the public.

These mortals were easily enticed with lights, rides, and games. It had always been that way. A carnival made parents feel safe when leaving their child with a stranger. He let out a silent chuckle, “If they only knew the truth.” His carnival was one of the most dangerous places on this earth, especially for the living.

Since the carnies were still shrouded in darkness, they let their true forms take shape. Some were still hungry and wanted to go find a bite to eat before going to sleep.
